Chuck & Doug's Blog - Feb 12

Up to start our day at 4:45 AM!   Yikes...that's 1:45 AM Hay River time!  Got Joseph and Brandon up for breakfast and they were off to Martock with Doug once they had their guns out of lock-up.  Chuck hung back and travelled with the girls for their 12:00 session.

The course is being described as a technical one...lots of twists and turns.  Some hills, but as Joseph says...you get enough speed off the downhill to almost carry you up the next hill.  Both the boys and girls did some shooting and combo work, after which they pre-skiied thier routes with Gail for tomorrow's race.  All the biathletes settled in nicely and had solid grouping on paper and solid results on metal. After practice, it was back on the bus for the one hour ride back to Halifax.

Great job to Paul on the waxing today!  After catching the 5:30 AM bus to Martock and getting boosted through a window into the waxing room (our key from the host society still does not work), Paul worked diligently testing various waxes with the athletes and preparing for tomorrow's race.  Conditions changed alot from the morning with the boys to the afternoon with the girls, so he was a busy man strategizing and working on the skis.

Once back, we attended the coaches meeting for an hour....one piece of good news is that they have given the Yukon and NWT permission to enter the relay on Friday as an unofficial team.  There was some debate as this has apparently not occurred in the history of the CWG...but we are in!  There is one boy and two girls here from the Yukon; the boys will make a team of three and the three best sprint times on Tuesday will be used to determine the make-up of the girls team.

Another early start and our first race tomorrow...we will apparently have Minister McLeod cheering on the team as well!  Cool!  All in all a good day and everyone is feeling like we have a plan and are ready for the Individual.  There are 39 competitors in each field....Brandon and Charlene have early starts & Gaylen start towards the end of the field.  Good luck and Go Team NWT Biathlon!  Watch for results tomorrow!
